Today's tale takes us on a journey through the eyes of a hiker, a thru-hiker to be precise, as they navigate the Appalachian Trail with a unique blend of adventure and indulgence.
The Wet and the Sweet
Our hiker, let's call them Dubs, awoke to a damp reality, a consequence of camping on grass and the inevitable condensation. But with a cup of coffee and a donut, courtesy of Linda, the day began on a sweet note.
Cruising and Cookies
The hiking commenced with a road walk, a brief detour through West Hartford, and a tempting farmstand with chocolate chip cookies. Fueled by treats, Dubs and their companions ventured back into the woods, tackling a small climb and cruising through the morning's flat terrain.
Snacks and States
As the morning progressed, they popped out onto a road again, this time en route to Norwich. A quick snack stop at Dan & Whit's General Store provided a much-needed energy boost before crossing the Connecticut River into New Hampshire - the penultimate state on their journey.
Ivy League Indulgences
Hanover, home to Dartmouth College, welcomed our hikers with open arms. Despite the juxtaposition of an Ivy League town and dirty hikers, Hanover offered a unique experience. From free pastries at Lou's (a creampuff, no less) to a slice of pizza at Ramuntos, and even some complimentary caramels at Red Kite, it was a day of culinary delights.
A Stadium and a Store
The Dartmouth football field provided a unique pitstop, offering a chance to explore the stadium and dry out their tents. A visit to a bookstore, which conveniently served beer, led to a resupply mission and a well-deserved rest at a nearby hotel.
A Day's Recap
In total, Dubs hiked 10.2 miles with an ascent and descent of over 2000 feet. A productive day, especially considering the heat and humidity.
Final Thoughts
This journey showcases the unique experiences and indulgences that can be found along the Appalachian Trail. From wet tents to sweet treats, and Ivy League towns to well-deserved rest stops, it's a trail that offers a balance of challenges and rewards. Personally, I think it's a testament to the human spirit and our ability to find joy and comfort in the most unexpected places.
